Showcase: Jennylee & My Time In The Getty Museum’s Cave Temples of Dunhuang (05/21/16)

Music and culture, after the break!

Jennylee & My Time In The Getty Museum’s Cave Temples of Dunhuang (05/21/16)

A Blood Red Full Moon shined brightly over The Getty Museum on their inaugural Saturdays off the 405 summer series this past Saturday....

These FREE monthly events are probably my favorite yearly activity in my impromptu concert calendar. Regardless of the act, really I don’t try to miss it. The setting alone makes for a romantic and memorable evening.

Jennylee (The artist/bassist formerly known as Jenny Lee Lindberg of Warpaint) continued to support her critically acclaimed 2015 debut solo LP – Right On! (out now!) – that night by playing a hour long set full of indie pop goodness. Wasn’t sure if her material would capture the attention of the all age audience… luckily a good chunk of patrons stayed with Jenny Lee for the entire session. Her fanatic Warpaint groupies kept the energy high, drawing as much energy from the electronic “feels” happening on stage.

Really loved the lighting when the sun went down. Bright primary color filters painted Jennylee and her crew like musical spirits. This truly captured the colorful look of Spaceland Presents… major venues (The Echo/Echoplex). As the summer rolls on, the sun will procrastinate longer and longer. So seeing a show at The Getty at twilight reeks of glamour. Hopefully, you’ll get that chance.

Once we wrapped up sight seeing and meditating atop on the third floor, staring aimlessly out over Westwood & Santa Monica like we normally do, we proceeded out… where this massive tent sat next to the busy Trams. “What is that?”, was my first words once we arrived atop earlier BTW.  Found out that this mysterious tent was The Getty’s prestigious new replica exhibit – “Cave Temples Of Dunhuang: Buddhist Art On China’s Silk Road”. The line wrapped around the side of the building too. 45 minutes before closing this tent’s fifteen minute wait.

You’ll go room to room through three distinct rooms featuring murals of Buddhist paintings, sculptures, and iconography all around you. The pictures do a better job showcasing what I’m trying to explain. Got a whole set of them in the gallery. Take special note of each roof.

The tour is short. You get a limited amount of time in each room. Recommend you take pictures. Helps with explanations… like this! Make sure you pick up your tickets in the lobby. Never know when you’ll come across a nice museum attendant like we did.

PHOTOGRAPHER NOTES:

Shot solely with my super powered Nikon D3300. Was annoying to the people behind me while shooting Jenny Lee. Meh. Many “sorry not sorry”. They all came out better than I hoped. No Flash. No problem.

Check out the rest below. Other than that, not sure I’ll be back to The Getty for the rest of the Summer. But you should definitely go check out a concert above the city. You and your lover will dig it. Doesn’t get more LA than this.

New adventures soon!
