A SXSW Encore, after the break…
Wiltern Theatre, Los Angeles.
Because I basically saw this same showcase in Austin, knew the gimmicks New Politics were going to bring during their set. They are a band who loved audience interaction & participation as they jump around to their rocking beats. Like their music. The type of show that 18 year olds & their mums get really jumpy for. It’s all the break dancing, guitar throwing, & stage jumping shirtless from lead singer, David Boyd. With hits like “Harlem“, “Tonight You’re Perfect“…their goal is simple: to steal the show. Every night. Harder said than done especially from a band like Fall Out Boy. Dave & The guys try with their catchy hooks & hard rock with a hip hop twist. If you’re looking for that band to turn knob from 5 to 11 — look no further than NP.
Overall, same show as Austin. Go check out their debut album — ‘A Bad Girl in Harlem‘. You’ll dig it.
My “banned” camera found itself out of it’s case during the intermission. If I was going to get kicked out…I was gonna go out swinging with one or two gems from Fall Out Boy’s Sold Out concert at the Wiltern. Their second show in Los Angeles since reforming. My second FOB showcase of 2013. Promised I wouldn’t pay money to see them after SXSW, but that promise was quickly thrown aside when I heard how amazing ‘Save Rock N’ Roll’ was. Felt my Austin experience was a incomplete one.

My perfect mixtape of FOB tracks. Sure it was missing many personal favorites like, “Fame < Infamy”, “Of All The Gin Joints…”, etc. That’s what Spotify is made for. The set list brought out the music fan boy in me. All the songs had visuals that accompanied them on the giant plasmas behind the band. This ranged from music videos (Phoenix), giant electric FOB signage, to picture slideshows. The “Save Rock N’ Roll” piano acoustic encore had every major music superstar’s picture, alive & dead, featured in the cascade of transitions. Not sure if 2pac is a Rock N’ Roll superstar? FOB thinks so.
Patrick, Pete, and the rest of the guys played fantastic — full or energy & vigor. No road rust. Seemed quite excited to be melting our faces with their collection of hits. Sure some of the lyrics were inaudible over the the clashing of instruments…but us fans know exactly what they are saying. It’s engraved in our minds. There were no guests to speak of. FOB doesn’t need guests, they’ll rock out to everything plus or minus Elton John. Much of their catalog are straight up FOB.
Biggest shock of the evening was the running commentary from Pete Wentz who would chat with us, house lights on, during each song break. Talking about personal bullshit & drama that once plagued them. Really fleshed out and made the sold out, jam packed, Wiltern as intimate as the Troubadour. Wasn’t expecting “Storytellers: Fall Out Boy”.
This was the ultimate FOB show. Wish I could lie to you. Was even better the second time. Luckily, they are still touring. Go check them out. If you are really, really, reallllllllyyyyyy unable too…hit repeat on this!
